The Law the Lawyers Know About

New Publication

THE LAW THE LAWYERS KNOW ABOUT by Hilary Pepler

Inspired by our recent experiences of moving house and relocating to Scotland, herewith is our latest pamphlet.  This poem was first published in 1923 by handpress printer Hilary Pepler of St. Dominic’s Press, where he contrasts the contrived laws of lawyers with the breadth of curiosities to be found in the natural world. Our version is decorated with nine colourful wood engravings loaned to us by artist and printer Andy English.

Printed with Bembo and Elizabeth types on Glastonbury Laid paper, and hand stitched into handmade paper made by Two Rivers of Watchet in Somerset, the edition is 180 sewn copies, with another 60 available for others to bind.

Update on moving Incline Press from Oldham to Scotland: it continues!
Our builders have done a fantastic job preparing the floor for the presses, and electrical work is underway, along with decorating, gardening and learning the ropes of hiring a self drive van.  This week, the specialist removal dream team of Jeremy, Giles, Steve and Stuart, have been moving the presses north and we are planning the next phase of moving the large collection of type cabinets and galley racks later in the month.

The sale of the Bow Street building should be completed in a few weeks as the lawyers are dragging their feet.  Then the main building work will begin to fix the roof, chimney, windows, log burner and building a kitchen.  Hopefully we can print around these trifling matters and get back to work with only a couple of weeks interruption.  The Herbert Read War Poetry book, is currently on the press.

Our new address is Incline Press, 8 St John Street, Creetown, DG8 7JF.

A tight squeeze past the bus and causing a bit of a stir in Creetown, but the skilled team managed to get all the presses through the front door with a whole 1/4" to spare.

St Brides Wayzgoose and Oxford Fine Press book fairs
Somehow, amongst all the packing, moving and redecorating, we managed a trip to London and then Oxford (and two trips to Scotland) within a week.  The St Bride Foundation Wayzgoose was a great chance for us to sell and donate some type and other gear, chat with good friends and sample the cake.  As ever, the Oxford book fair was of impeccable standard and have given us a great deal of inspiration and encouragement.  Thank you to both organising committees who work so hard to bring the book arts to new audiences.
